The Village of Ardencroft, founded in 1950, purposely made no restrictions as to who might purchase property. Most developments at the time had racial exclusions.
Pauline Young was one of the first residents. At the 75th celebration of the founding of Ardencroft, an existing park was named for her. Speakers remembered her and other civil rights workers, especially the role of nearby Claymont in integrating schools, as well as the Arden School.
