Churches have become a frequent venue for performances of jazz music. At the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew in Wilmington, Delaware, these performances often happen in the context of services of Vespers. This service featured an opening prayer, a reading of “The Creation” by James Weldon Johnson, quotes from the Pope’s Encyclical on Ecology of 2015 and from Mother Theresa, a reading of “Bridges Not Walls” by Jan Sutch Pickard, and a prayer from Saint Francis. These photos are from the hour-long rehearsal before the service on Sunday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m. by musicians Jonathan Whitney (percussion and music director), Joe Anderson (trumpet and E.V.I.), Tom Palmer (piano), and Rob Swanson (bass).
