Recommended: Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter

Cypress Knob at Pedernales Falls State Park, Texas, 1991 by Danny N. Schweers

So far, I am happy with my new Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter. Above is the third scan attempted and below are details of that scan. Click on the images to see them at 100%.

I did not overthink this. I screwed the adapter onto the front of a Nikon AF Micro Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 lens. This is not the recommended lens. The image fills only 80% of the frame or so. The lens and adapter was then attached to a Nikon D850 body. With the ISO set to 64 and autofocus turned on, I pointed the camera at an overhead light. Because everything is connected, I could do this hand-held without any obvious vibration blur.

The negative scanned was 35mm Kodak 5052 Tmax film from 1991. What do you do with thousands of negatives from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s? I hope to digitize the best. I also expect to find images like this one that I had forgotten about years ago.

Detail One. This captures the best focused part of the image.
Detail Two. I especially like the look of the grain in this image. Very satisfying!
